We celebrate the life of the renowned US-born African actor James Earl Jones (1931-2024) who joined the ancestors this week with a throwback to 1988, when he collaborated with filmmaker David Hoffman in documenting Cuba’s then-30 years of revolutionary socialism.

Jones’ trademark baritone narration beautifully captured the emotion of Cuban troops returning from their 13-year mission in Angola, where they had gone to fight for the revolutionary ruling party, People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), against the US- and South Africa-backed the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) and the National Liberation Front of Angola (FNLA). About 10,000 Cuban troops reportedly gave their lives in the struggle for African liberation in Angola.

Many of the Cubans who served in Angola were descendants of enslaved Africans shipped to Cuba between the 16th and 19th centuries. Cuban leader Fidel Castro alluded to this in a December 1975 speech, ‘African blood flows freely through our veins.’ He also warned US and South African imperialists, ‘We are part of the world revolutionary movement, and in Africa’s struggle against racists and imperialists, we’ll stand, without any hesitation, side by side with the peoples of Africa.’

During a 1988 speech to South Africa’s parliament, Castro said 381,432 Cuban soldiers and officers fought in Africa against imperialist intervention. As part of Castro’s policy of internationalism, Cuba sent tens of thousands of Cuban doctors, dentists, nurses, academics, teachers, and engineers to Africa and elsewhere, despite bearing the weight of US-imposed sanctions since 1960.

Despite our accusers failing to substantiate their claims, social media giants took down our accounts without asking the U.S. government to provide any evidence to back their allegations. Well, we guess that the U.S. is so trustworthy that the world can believe whatever it says. After all, it didn’t lie about Iraq having weapons of mass destruction. It didn’t even lie about the Gulf of Tonkin incident.
The attacks by the U.S. government and the subsequent de-platforming by social-media giants have made it impossible for us to carry out our essential work, forcing us to make the difficult decision to shut down African Stream. The Taíno and Arawak peoples of Haiti, once thriving communities with deep spiritual and agricultural systems, were nearly wiped out within decades of Columbus’s arrival. They were enslaved, mutilated, and hunted like animals all in the name of gold and empire.
In Australia, British colonisers declared the land ‘Terra Nullius’ - or nobody’s land - while thousands of Aboriginal people were massacred in cold blood. In Queensland, it’s thought over 24,000 Indigenous lives were taken by government-sanctioned forces. This was not law and order. This was ethnic cleansing, dressed in European uniforms.
Across the Pacific, the lie of civilisation took the form of ‘Blackbirding’ - kidnapping tens of thousands from Melanesia and forcing them into backbreaking labour on plantations. Meanwhile, imported diseases erased entire communities.
This is not ancient history. The scars are still fresh. The descendants of these communities are still here, still fighting, still remembering. Because colonisation was never about civilisation, it was about extraction, domination and the silencing of Indigenous voices.

However, M23 appears to serve more so as an economic tool, facilitating the extraction and smuggling of minerals like gold and tantalum, which reports say Rwanda exports despite possessing few domestic reserves.

African Zanzibaris remained landless, jobless and locked out of the system.Show more Frustration simmered. Then, on 12 January, it exploded. A coalition of African revolutionaries led by Ugandan John Okello overthrew the ruling class in a swift and violent uprising. By sunrise, the Sultan had fled, and the People’s Republic of Zanzibar was born under the Afro-Shirazi Party. It marked the end of centuries of Arab dominance and colonial hierarchy, ushering in land reforms, nationalisation and a bold socialist agenda.
The revolution shocked the world. Western powers feared a left-leaning state in East Africa. And so, within months, Zanzibar merged with Tanganyika to form Tanzania, a strategic union aimed at at keeping the imperialist forces at bay.
Today, Zanzibar remains semi-autonomous, and its revolution is remembered with both pride and pain. It dismantled colonial systems, but left scars that remain. Still, it stands as a powerful reminder: when African people are denied justice long enough, they will rise - as they did in Zanzibar. Show less

That’s nearly half of Somalia’s maritime income going to a foreign country. Moreover, since signing a ten-year oil-exploration deal with Somalia, Turkey has made a 20-billion-barrel discovery worth 1.6 trillion dollars. And Ankara also has its biggest overseas military base in Somalia.
Let’s be honest: this is influence and exploitation, not solidarity and friendship. And this isn’t about Turkey and Somalia alone. It’s about Africa’s sovereignty, our right to negotiate on an equal footing, to develop without being cornered, to say ‘no’ when help comes with strings attached.

Unfortunately, the world has largely ignored the Congolese people’s suffering.
In December 2023, African Stream's Erick Gavala visited a camp for displaced people in Kanyaruchinya village, Goma, located at the base of the Nyiragongo volcano, to speak with those affected.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that from January to November 2024, the war had displaced over 3 million Congolese, with 96 per cent occurring in the eastern region. Among the 658,000 newly displaced individuals in North and South Kivu provinces, women comprised approximately 380,000, and children under the age of five represented more than 100,000. In addition to the humanitarian crisis and conflict, some women shared experiences of abuse and r*pe.
As the war rages on, the world continues to turn a blind eye to the Congolese people's suffering. One possible reason for the silence from Western media is that affluent states benefit from the instability in the Congo. In January 2025, M23 rebels, backed by Rwanda and Uganda, seized control of vast swaths of the mineral-rich provinces of North Kivu and South Kivu, including the provincial capitals of Goma and Bukavu. They now oversee the illegal mineral trade through Rwanda, earning about $800,000 each month, which fuels the greed of tech industries at the cost of impoverished Congolese.
Despite the DRC and Rwanda signing a US-brokered and Qatari-hosted peace deal on 27 June, the suffering of displaced Congolese continues, while the root causes of their troubles—exploitation by foreign-backed interests and complicity by the ruling elite—remain unaddressed. Show less

Known as the ‘Congo Free State’ until 1908, it served as a source of raw materials, like rubber, for the early 20th century’s booming automobile industry. Leopold’s harsh exploitation of the Congo reportedly led to around 10 million to 15 million deaths.
Fast forward to the 21st century, another industrial boom, this time in electric mobility and smart technologies, is driven by essential minerals from the DRC. These are resources that, if acquired and managed legally, could have turned the country into one of the wealthiest and most stable in the world.
In December 2023, African Stream’s Erick Gavala went to the DRC’s mineral-rich eastern region to understand how the tech industry is contributing to instability. Conflict minerals, illegally trafficked by rebel groups such as the Rwanda- and Uganda-backed M23, feed greedy Western corporations, which claim to make their products with conflict-free minerals despite clear evidence to the contrary.
Erick’s report reveals why the DRC remains impoverished despite possessing an estimated $24 trillion in untapped mineral resources. It accounts for nearly two-thirds of the world’s cobalt production, a crucial metal used in lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles, smartphones, and laptops. It is also the second-largest source of coltan (Columbite-Tantalite), a vital source of tantalum used in capacitors for phones, computers, and other electronics. The DRC’s cassiterite is a primary source of tin, essential for soldering electronic components. Wolframite is the primary source of tungsten used in the vibrating components of phones and other electronic devices.
The three-decade foreign-backed resource war has featured horrific sxual and human rights abuses, klling at least 6 million people by 2010, with many more since. Moreover, the war has displaced over 7 million people. Show less

Let that sink in. Meanwhile, Morocco, the primary host, is using this exercise to consolidate its control over Western Sahara, a territory whose people have fought for decades for independence. Algeria has refused to take part because to include Israel while Gaza is still burning is not ‘cooperation.’
This exercise isn’t just a military drill. It’s part of a larger script, one where Africa remains the chessboard, and global powers continue to play games with our borders, our people, and our sovereignty. Show less

He is remembered as a symbol of anti-imperialism and African unity, who played a significant role in the transformation of the Congo from a colony of Belgium into an independent republic.
He remains one of the most enduring national heroes and pan-African icons. Malcom X called him ‘the greatest Black man who ever walked the African continent.’ Lumumba was a leading member of the Congolese independence movement. He entered the history books on 30 June 1960. That was the day that Belgian Congo - as it was then known - broke away from Belgian colonial rule.
In the presence of Belgium's King Baudouin, Lumumba accused the former colonial masters of treachery and forcing 'humiliating slavery' on the Congolese people. The speech caused fear among the Europeans, concerned that anti-White vengeance would be the main theme of Lumumba's administration. Hence, they started plotting to assassinate him. This is why most historians believe Lumumba was a marked man from the moment he made this speech.
Less than 7 months after independence, in January 1961, he was arrested and murdered, with the full knowledge of the CIA and the Belgians. For the Congolese people, the events of 1960-61 represented yet another chapter of a long horror story, as the US-backed Joseph Mobutu, who had once sworn allegiance to Lumumba, would seize power and misrule the country for more than three decades.
