Also included is the restoration of a short version of the film which Magnus Hirschfeld used for his anthology Gefahren der Liebe – Laws of Love.

Der Geigenvirtuose Paul Körner fördert das musikalische Talent des jungen Kurt Sivers, dessen Eltern das schwärmerische Verhältnis der beiden mit Misstrauen beobachten. Körner wird wegen seiner Homosexualität vom Ganoven Bollek erpresst. Schließlich zeigt Körner den Erpresser an, der sich mit einer Anzeige wegen § 175 revanchiert.

In einer Rückblende berichtet Körner Else, Sivers' verständnisvoller Schwester, seine Entwicklung und besucht mit ihr einen Vortrag von Sanitätsrat Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld über die wissenschaftlichen Hintergründe der Homosexualität. Magnus Hirschfeld drehte 1927 den Dokumentarfilm Gesetze der Liebe und verwendete für das Thema Homosexualität eine gekürzte Fassung des Films Anders als die Andern. Gesetze der Liebe fiel kurz nach Erscheinen ebenfalls der Zensur zum Opfer. 1928 wurde der Film zum ersten Mal in der Sowjetunion aufgeführt. Im Zentralen Staatsarchiv der UdSSR für Film- und Fotodokumente wurde eine Version mit ukrainischen Untertiteln aufbewahrt. Diese Fassung wurde Ende der 1970er-Jahre vom Stadtmuseum München entdeckt.

1982 wurde für das 1. SchwulLesbische Filmfest in Frankfurt am Main die gekürzte Fassung als 16-mm-Kopie vom Stadtmuseum München ausgeliehen, die ukrainischen Untertitel übersetzt und während der Vorführung eingelesen. Die Originalfassung von Anders als die Andern ist nicht mehr erhalten. Die Filmkopien sind nach dem Verbot zerstört worden. The doctor and sexologist Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld (1868-1935) was a media star of the sexual reform movement of the 1910s and 1920s: he founded the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee, published the yearbook for sexual intermediate stages, worked as an expert in litigation, was an advisor to numerous feature films on sexual subjects, and was director the Berlin Institute for Sexology published dozens of books and traveled the country with lectures. In 1919 he appeared in Richard Oswald's film OTHER THAN THE OTHER, which promoted the understanding of homosexuality and the abolition of paragraph 175. The film sparked fierce controversy and ultimately led to the reintroduction of state censorship, which was abolished after the First World War, and the film was banned.

When Richard Oswald's film production company was dissolved in 1927, Hirschfeld was able to fall back on DIFFERENT THAN THE OTHER. He designed the film LAWS OF LOVE, which is a large-scale cultural film in five chapters dealing with the gender of plants, animals and humans, and deals with the "tragedy of a homosexual" in chapter 6. But on October 12, 1927, LAWS OF LOVE was banned by the Berlin film supervisory authority for public screenings, because "his intention to explain the nature of homosexuality was in no way carried out with scientific objectivity", the screening of the "anomalies shown on living persons and abnormalities "forbid" for the general reasons of decency and good manners "and it is" all deterring and enlightening the youth in a healthy direction.

On October 30, 1927, the film was submitted to censorship a second time, this time in a revised version that was originally shortened from six files (2,474 meters) to four files (2,035 meters), in which the last chapter was completely omitted. After the fourth act was shortened by “the representation of human anomalies and abnormalities” (279 meters by 531 meters), this version was approved for public demonstration with a ban on young people on November 9 and was shown twice on November 16 in the Beba Palace Atrium. Magnus Hirschfeld supplemented the film with a lecture in which he showed the forbidden parts "in a standing photograph".

The only surviving copy of LAWS OF LOVE has Ukrainian subtitles and goes back to the released version of the second censorship template. A 487 meter long version of Chapter 5 has also been preserved with Ukrainian titles. In 2019, the Filmmuseum Munich tried to restore the original version of LAWS OF LOVE. The wording of the subtitles was largely taken from a booklet sold in 1927 when the film was screened and a censorship card from August 12, 1932. Missing parts of the film were replaced by corresponding photos, almost all of which were published by Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld come from. The Begelit music for piano and violin was recorded by Günter A. Buchwald in 2020.

Synopsis

Veidt portrays a successful violinist, Paul Körner, who falls in love with one of his male students. A sleazy extortionist threatens to expose Körner as a homosexual. Flashbacks show us how Körner became aware of his orientation and tried first to change it, then to understand it. Körner and the extortionist end up in court, where the judge is sympathetic to the violinist, but when the scandal becomes public, Körner's career is ruined and he is driven to suicide.

Historical context

The film, which co-starred and was co-written by sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld, refers to Hirschfeld's theory of "sexual intermediacy". The theory places homosexuality within a broad spectrum comprising heterosexuality, bisexuality, transgenderism, and transvestism (a word invented by Hirschfeld). The film's protagonist first meets his blackmailer at a costume party, and the blackmailer also frequents a drag club; these scenes are the earliest film footage of gay men and lesbians dancing. The film was initially shipped in 40 copies throughout Germany and the Netherlands by Oswald, and it was shown for nearly a year before the authorities stepped in and banned public screenings, allowing it to be shown only to doctors and lawyers. The Nazis destroyed the majority of the prints and only one copy of the film is known to exist.[3]

UCLA Film and Television Archive purchased an original fine-grain master positive of the film's footage, which Hirschfeld inserted in his own film Laws of Love from the Russian State Film and Photo Archive.[2]

The early gay anthem "Das lila Lied" from 1920 appears to reference the film's title at the start of its chorus ("Wir sind nun einmal anders als die Andern").
