Since last November, thousands of Spanish doctors and medical workers have struggled against low pay and understaffing in their sector. Madrid's right-wing regional government and its president, Isabel Diaz Ayuso, made an enemy of much of the medical sector by pushing for the privatization of the health system and opposing the COVID-19 lockdown at the height of the pandemic.

The lock-in started a few days after 30,000 health workers protested in the capital in mid-January. According to doctors' unions, Madrid spends the least per capita on primary health care of all Spanish regions, despite having the highest per capita income.

Thousands flooded the streets of central London for a huge demonstration towards the Houses of Parliament, while the strike was joined by teachers, university staff, border force staff, civil servants and train drivers.

The workers are protesting real-terms pay cuts and soaring costs of living as the Tory government digs its heels in and continues driving ahead with attacks on public services. In December last year, the Office for National Statistics reported that average real-terms pay had fallen at the fastest rate for 20 years.

Legislation introduced by notorious former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, made it impossible for the Trades Union Congress (TUC) which represents over 50 unions, to call a general strike, but increasingly, unions have been coordinating their strikes and today, the mass action has shut schools, caused university lectures to be canceled, paralyzed the rail service and even forced the military to be on standby to conduct border checks.

Ongoing strikes have been planned for the rest of the month.

Israel's President Benjamin Netanyahu announced chilling measures to boost the already enormous number of private firearms in the hands of Jewish settlers. Defense Minister Yoav Galant had instructed Israeli forces to step up their activities, especially in the Jerusalem area, and to increase the number of "preventive operations."

The number of Palestinians killed by Israel since the beginning of the year climbed to at least 35 people, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. Last year, Israeli forces killed over 150 people in the West Bank, including 30 children, the highest number since UN records began.
