Clinton: "You know, there is such a continuing anxiety about upsetting the Chinese, and there are two big reasons for that. One, Henry Kissinger mentioned, maybe some unintended consequence of war down the road somewhere. But also the economic issue. And here it's time we recognize that we need to rebuild our own supply chains, even if that requires a certain level of subsidized industrial productivity. We cannot be dependent on the Chinese market. It's not only bad for our economies, it is bad for our geopolitical strategic interests. Look at what happened with the lack of personal protective equipment or certain pharmaceutical ingredients when the pandemic hit. We were at the mercy of China. Well, we cannot let that continue and we need to work together across the Atlantic to figure out how we're going to take back production. Now, will it be as low cost? Of course not. And how do we set our tax systems and other arrangements so that there are incentives for our businesses to return to Western democracies to produce things? And I would- I would add that more and more businesses are seeing that, unless they are low-cost producers of retail clothing - which, you know, probably will never come back for all the obvious reasons - but if they are producing anything more sophisticated, increasingly the Chinese government, through coercion, through unfair regulation, through enforced partnerships or royalty agreements, is slowly stealing that intellectual property anyway. So, I do think that we've got to get smarter about how we deal with the economic threat and for people who say, 'Oh, well, you know that- that- that disrupts the market,' CHINA has disrupted the market! China is not a free market economy. We tried. We let them into the world trade organization, we sent our businesses over there, we made trade deals! They are a controlled, top-down economy. You will never compete and win against them unless you take back the means of production."

Kim-Gibson: "I also attended church from the time when I was little." ...

Interviewee: "There were many churches in Pyongyang. Actually, because there were so many churches, we called it the second Jerusalem."

Kim-Gibson: "Yes, I know. My mother went to Seo-Moon High School here, which is the Christian school."

Interviewee: "I also attended Seo-Moon High School."

Kim-Gibson: [in voice-over narration] "I couldn't believe this. Here was a woman who went to the same school as my mother. I felt connected to this woman instantly." ...

Interviewee: "After we were liberated, when the Japanese were defeated, what I remember is that all the Japanese went home. Because after we were liberated, the People's Government was established. A lot of churches were born freely. After that we lived in peace. We were able to live in peace for the next five years."

Kim-Gibson: "Until the war broke out."

Interviewee: "I believe those five years were our golden age. We attended church every week after school. But soon there was no church left because of the heavy bombing. Even during the worship service, the bombing killed a lot of people. When I think of that time, even now tears gather in my eyes. So many of my friends died. Then we heard that the U.S. was planning to drop the atomic bomb. We were threatened that we would all die and must go south. Because of that threat, a lot of my people headed south. Americans shot those people and killed them. So they killed, largely by bombing but also by shooting. They bombed us even during worship service. No churches were left in Pyongyang! Before the war, we thought Americans were angels from God, but after the war, we hated them."

Victoria Nuland and Ron Johnson discuss "rolling back" and "ending permanently" Nord Stream 2 and "taking action that will prevent it from ever becoming operational" in a 2021 Senate Foreign Relations Committee to examine U.S.-Russia policy.

Transcript:

Johnson: "Chairman, Under Secretary Nuland, welcome. I certainly appreciate you spending some time with us last night in a secured briefing uh and i think it's important that you hear today. Uh I want to associate myself with remarks of the chairman and the and the ranking member. I think if there's one thing that Vladimir Putin ought to understand it's how unified we are. i mean, there are many things that divide us politically in this country, but when it comes to pushing back on Russian aggression, supporting countries like Ukraine that are trying to develop their freedom, free themselves from the legacy of corruption from their former involvement with the Soviet Union, we are very strongly united.

"Often, you know, within this discussion, you were talking about a unprecedented level of sanctions. I think it'd be important for the public, for the senate for congress, uh, but for Vladimir Putin to really understand it in somewhat granular detail what we're talking about, uh, what we'd impose on them, and how unf- how harmful it would be to Russia. now, unfortunately, to Russian people. but, Vladimir Putin ought to be concerned about the Russian population more concerned than we are. uh, we can't allow this. but so can you really describe the types of sanctions that you are contemplating and pushing with our European allies?"

Nuland: "Senator, thanks for- thanks for that statement of of unity and for- for your strong statement here today. As we discussed last night, in some detail, what we are talking about would amount to essentially isolating Russia completely from the global financial system, with all of the fallout that that would entail for Russian business, for the Russian people, for their ability to to work and travel and trade, and we are looking at the full suite of options. I think in the in the context of the diplomacy that we are doing and the work that we're doing internally, I was gratified to have a chance to go through some of those specific measures in the classified session yesterday. But, going beyond that in this open session, I think, doesn't um, help us get from here to there, but we- every- everything is on the table, I would say, if- if that is helpful."

Johnson: "One thing that I believe certainly the center foreign relations committee is pretty unified on it may not be unanimous was our support for sanctions against Nord Stream 2 pipeline, and that I think we were all many of us were very disappointed that those sanctions were not fully implemented and the construction continued. I can't think of a more powerful way to punish Russian aggression than by rolling back what progress has been made, and, if at all possible, uh, prevent the Nord Stream 2 from ever being completed. Is that something that is being discussed with allies? Is that something that's being contemplated?"

Nuland: "Absolutely. And as, if as you recall, from the July U.S.-German statement that was very much uh in that statement that if that any moves Russian aggression against Ukraine, uh, would have a direct impact on the pipeline, and that is our expectation and the conversation that we're having."

Johnson: "So again, direct impact is one thing but I'm- I'm literally talking about rolling back the pipeline, you know, you can loosely define that. But, i mean, taking action that will prevent it from ever becoming operational."

Nuland: "I think if president Putin moves on Ukraine, our expectation is that the pipeline will be suspended."

Johnson: "Well, I certainly hope that the senate foreign relations committee would take up legislation to go beyond just suspending it, but from ending it permanently. But anyway thank you undersecretary Nuland."

Clark: "About 10 days after 9/11 I went through the Pentagon and I saw secretary Rumsfeld and and deputy secretary Wolfowitz. I went downstairs just to say hello to some of the people on the joint staff who used used to work for me, and one of the generals called me in he said, 'Sir you got to come in, you got to come in and talk to me a second.' I said, 'Well, you're too busy,' he said 'no, no' he says, 'We've made the decision, we're going to war with Iraq.' This was on or about the 20th of September. I said, 'We're going to war with Iraq? Why?' He said, 'I don't know,' he said, 'I guess they don't know what else to do.' So uh, I said, 'Well did they find some information connecting Saddam to Al Qaeda?' He said 'No, no' he says 'there's nothing new that way, they just made the decision to go to war with Iraq,' he said 'I guess it's like we don't know what to do about terrorists but we got a good military and we can take down governments.'"

Clark: ... "So I came back to see him a few weeks later and by that time we were bombing in Afghanistan. I said, 'Are we still going to war with Iraq? And he said, 'Oh it's worse than that,' he said, he reached over on his desk he picked up a piece of paper and he said, 'I just' he said, 'I just got this down from upstairs' - meaning the secretary of defense's office - 'today' and he said, 'this is a memo that describes how we're going to take out seven countries in five years, starting with Iraq and then Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and finishing off, Iran.'"

Clark: "Well, starting with Iraq, then Syria and Lebanon, then Libya then Somalia and Sudan and then back to Iran."
