<description>On this day in 1987, Thomas Sankara, the socialist president of Burkina Faso was assassinated. A true humanist, Marxist revolutionary and Pan-Africanist, Sankara led a coup in 1983 and became the President of Burkina Faso. In four years, he transformed the country into an economically independent and socially progressive nation. This clip is from Sankara’s Orphans, a documentary about the 600 youth Sankara sent to study in Cuba in 1986. The Cuban Revolutionary government offered them an education to learn a profession and return to help develop their own country. The film shows the relationship between the two revolutions, and between Castro and Sankara. And, exposes what happened to the young people when Sankara was assassinated just a year later.
