He says Iran’s leadership are seeking “to negotiate” following his threats of military intervention, but told reporters aboard Air Force One that “we may have to act before a meeting”. Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, says the country is ready for negotiations but, responding to Trump’s repeated threats of intervention, warned that Iran is also “fully prepared for war”. Protests have spread across Iran since late last year, driven by a rapid economic decline. The country has a long history of popular unrest: Iran’s last shah was overthrown in 1979 by an Islamic revolution that brought the current theocratic establishment to power. State media report that more than 100 security personnel and police officers have been killed in the unrest, while opposition groups claim the death toll is far higher, including hundreds of anti-government protesters.
