Labor leader Ron Herrera and City Councilwoman Nury Martinez have resigned after protesters have demanded justice and accountability for Martinez’s racist and inflammatory anti-Black, anti-semitic, and anti-Indigenous remarks in a leaked private meeting. The meeting itself, between Herrera, Martinez, Councilman Kevin de León, and Councilman Gil Cedillo, was to redraw political districts to promote Latino political power—to the exclusion of Black political power, otherwise known as gerrymandering. De León and Cedillo have not yet resigned. Dr. Melina Abdullah, co-founder of Black Lives Matter-Los Angeles, organizer with Black Lives Matter Grassroots & professor of Pan-African Studies at Cal State LA, explains what’s going on in the Council, the city, and in our political system more broadly. The Chinese Communist Party’s 20th Congress, a multi-day conference every five years to set the priorities and leadership for the Party, begins this weekend in Beijing. Where has China come from and where is it headed? Will CCP General Secretary and Chinese President Xi Jinping secure a third term and what does that mean for China and the globe? Tings Chak, researcher at the Tricontinental Institute & a member of Dongsheng News collective, discusses the meaning of the Congress and what we might see from it. It’s been nearly a month since Hurricane Fiona hit, yet many are still without power, clean water, nutritious food, or adequate shelter. The local government and the U.S. federal government are providing little help—the majority of cleanup, repair, and care work is being organized by Puerto Ricans themselves despite limited resources. Damary Burgos, member of the Solidarity Brigade of the West, aid organizer since 48 hours before Hurricane Maria in 2017 & art professor with Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico, talks about the conditions in the aftermath of the storm and what the people of Puerto Rico really need. Indiana political prisoners Christopher “Naeem” Trotter and John “Balagoon” Cole fought back against a gang of KKK-aligned guards, the “Sons of Light,” in a 1985 prison rebellion, and tried to save someone’s life. They were then sentenced to 142 and 84 years in prison. Too Black, communications representative for the Defense Committee to Free Pendleton 2, poet, organizer & host of the Black Myths Podcast, explains what happened and how to get Naeem and Balagoon free after 37 years of wrongful incarceration. In the United States, the mainstream media plays a large role in establishing a false perception of crime and causing panic. Part of this is the consistent promotion of more police as a solution, when the evidence points to police as the problem. Civil Rights Corps attorney Kiah Duggins, who litigates against police abuse and unconstitutional bail practices, debunks this myth that U.S. police offer anything but crime, corruption, and terror. #BreakThroughNews
