Stand-up comedy is a new phenomenon in China, from very small beginnings in 2010 to today’s rising popularity among youth in particular. This cross-cultural conversation takes on the comedy scenes in the two countries, the pressures of being a woman comedian, Burning Man, and more. For this episode, American Comedian Kate Willett who has appeared on Netflix Comedy Lineup, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and Reply Guys joins Chinese comedian Norah Yang, who performs in English and Mandarin. Yang’s work can be followed at @NorahComedy on social media and also on the Chinese social media app Douyin @Norahyang where she has 3.5M followers. Overlap is a global conversation show based on a simple concept — while US elites are working to build a new Cold War environment with China, we want to do the opposite, with people-to-people dialogue and virtual exchanges that show how much we have in common, and how much we have to lose from a new policy of isolation and demonization. This show is made in collaboration with our friends at WaveMedia @WaveMedia, a private media house in China.
