MSNBC host Catherine Rampell confronted the 2025 Pulitzer winner over his “controversial” statement, to which Abu Toha responded by saying Damari is an Israeli soldier who, days after being freed, attended an Israeli Air Force graduation, a military unit responsible for the killing of 31 members of Abu Toha’s family. He then questioned why he is being forced to “sympathise with an Israeli soldier” who lost two fingers, while his cousin, and her entire family including her child, were killed in October 2023 in an Israeli air strike and still remain under the rubble until today.
