When Malcolm X visited Gaza in September 1964. The civil rights icon spent time in the Khan Younis refugee camp and listened to Palestinian poetry, an experience that inspired him to write an essay on the Israeli occupation. "I, for one, would like to impress, especially upon those who call themselves leaders, the importance in realising the direct connection between the struggle of the Afro-American in this country and the struggle of our people all over the world," Malcolm said upon his return to New York in December 1964. Among those international struggles was that of the Palestinian people, which he spoke about most vocally in the final six months of his life. Now, an educational colouring book produced by MEE journalist Azad Essa and illustrated by South African artist Nathi Ngubane brings to life Malcolm X’s only visit to the Gaza Strip.
