Indigenous communities, unions and other social movements organized the protest demanding the resignation of the country's acting president, Dina Boluarte. They dubbed the protest the "March of the Four Directions", referring to Peru's four regions. Many of the protesters made the long trek from the highlands, Amazon and northern areas of the country to the capital, Lima despite concerted efforts by the security forces to prevent this. Demonstrators clashed with some of the almost 12,000 police that were deployed in Lima as they attempted to march to the Congress and other public sites, including some of the main plazas. Tear gas and other projectiles fired by police on demonstrators left several injured. Boluarte was Vice President under leftist President Pedro Castillo, who was impeached and jailed in early December of 2022. Castillo's removal was seen as illegitimate by many, and protests against Boluarte and the Congress have been met with deadly force by military and police.
