Assata was wrongfully convicted for the death of a New Jersey state trooper in 1977, and in 1979, she escaped from prison and fled to Cuba, where she was granted political asylum for the rest of her life. Shakur was one of as many as 90 Black political refugees who were granted asylum by the revolutionary Cuban government, which faced sanctions from Washington for doing so.
