        <description>150 delegates from various social movements in Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia, Cuba, Mexico, Portugal, Haiti, Palestine, Chile, Nicaragua, Peru, and Paraguay gathered in Mar del Plata to commemorate the 20 years of the No al Alca (No to FTAA) historic moment in Latin America. In 2005, and led by presidents Hugo Chavez (Venezuela), Nestor Kirchner (Argentina) and Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (Brazil), Latin America decided not to move forward with the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). The FTAA, proposed by the United States, was seen as an imperial project to subjugate the region through “free market.” The 2005 meeting also marked a milestone of the progressive wave of movements and political projects in the region.</description>
