The action condemned the escalating repression of pro-Palestinian activism, as well as Australia’s military and corporate ties to Israel. Protesters highlighted the critical condition of hunger strikers Kamran Ahmed, who has now been on hunger strike for well over 60 days, and Heba Muraisi who has reached her 70th day on hunger strike. Bobby Sands, a member of the Provisional Irish Republican Army, died after 66 days of being on hunger strike in Northern Ireland in 1981.
