Though protesters don’t always agree, that is the grand stated goal of the World Economic Forum (or WEF), hosted annually in Davos - and now on its penultimate day. But rarely does the state of the world seem so much in the balance. Nor has the forum attracted quite so many headlines. At the centre of it all? You guessed it: US President Donald Trump. While Trump is keeping many on the edge of their seat, it was Mark Carney’ speech that got them on their feet. The Canadian Prime Minister earned a standing ovation with his blunt assessment of the state of the world. Carney didn’t mention Trump by name– but few are in doubt of who he meant. The WEF is widely seen as a symbol of the UN-led “international rules-based order”, which proclaims to defend liberal democracy, free trade and self-sovereignty. If anyone is “rupturing” that world order, it’s Trump. As Trump openly disregards the rules-based international order, Carney says it was a “pleasant fiction” all along.
