Diana DeGette got heated with a constituent pressing her on why she voted to send bombs to Israel. She said: "If this is the only issue that you care about is this issue, then you should not vote for me." She lost her primary on June 30, 2026 to 29-year-old Democratic Socialist Melat Kiros. Kiros is a former attorney and current Ph.D. student. She was born in Ethiopia in 1997, the same year DeGette took office. Kiros opposed US support for Israel as a cornerstone of her campaign. She called for a complete ban on weapons sales to Israel. DeGette opposes most arms sales to Israel except for defensive weapons. Kiros was fired from a law firm in 2023 after she refused to take down a letter that questioned Israel's historical legitimacy. She had endorsements from Senator Bernie Sanders and the Democratic Socialists of America. DeGette had endorsements from Colorado Democratic Reps. Joe Neguse, Jason Crow and Brittany Pettersen. Kiros won by nearly 10 percentage points. Her victory all but ensures her election in November because the district is solidly Democratic.
