Malema condemned violence against thousands of Zimbabwean and Nigerian immigrants, saying it is the result of “state-sponsored and capital-sponsored hatred to distract you from your economic opportunities.” He warned South Africans against falling into the trap of blaming the wrong people for their misfortunes and fuelling Black-on-Black hatred and violence. He drew on the country’s colonial history, reminding the crowd that it was white European settlers who conquered the land, and that decades of Apartheid have resulted in deep economic impoverishment and inequality that still affect indigenous Black South Africans today. The question is whether the economic inequality inherited from apartheid will push South Africa to the breaking point, especially as conditions worsen for many Black South Africans living in the most economically unequal country in the world. That inequality does not exist because of African migrants. It exists because white monopoly capital refused to redistribute the wealth accumulated through centuries of exploiting Black labour.
