You understand that that drone has a very powerful ability. It decides life or death,” explains Mohanad Hage Ali, senior fellow at the Carnegie Middle East Centre. Tareq Mazraani, an engineer from Houla in southern Lebanon, says his life has been upended since an Israeli drone went around southern villages, accusing him of working with Hezbollah and urging residents to expel him. “We're always worried and scared, there are drones and strikes. There is no peace,” he tells Middle East Eye. Tareq is one of at least 60,000 people whom Israel is preventing from returning to their villages, part of an apparent policy to depopulate border areas and turn them into a so-called buffer zone.
