The unrest began on Sunday after shopkeepers in Tehran’s largest mobile phone market shuttered their businesses in protest over the government’s handling of the country’s economic situation. Protesters were heard calling for the return of Reza Pahlavi, the last Shah of Iran, who has been living in exile since his father was overthrown in 1979. Basic necessities have become unaffordable, with years of US-imposed sanctions affecting the Iranian economy.
