In the weeks before her death, Fatma had been working on a photo diary for the nonprofit Plan International. They had intended to publish Fatma’s work without her name attached in an effort to protect her. In the wake of her killing, and with the permission of her family, Plan International is sharing her work to “proudly name and credit [her].” Fatma’s work has appeared in publications across the world. She worked with Plan as an advocate for girls and children in conflict. A day before her killing, Fatma learned that a documentary about her life, “Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk,” would be screened at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. On April 16, 2025, Fatma was killed alongside 10 of her family members in an airstrike on her home.
