Asked whether the UK would recognise a Palestinian state, Lammy said that recognitions so far by some European states had been “symbolic”, and that he hoped a UK recognition would come at a time where it could tangibly support progress toward a two-state solution. Lammy added that the UK was in talks with France as two permanent members of the UN Security Council about the possibility of recognising a Palestinian state. The recognition would likely come at a UN conference scheduled to discuss the two-state solution in June and co-hosted by France and Saudi Arabia.
