<description>China's Western Xia Dynasty (1038-1227) carved fierce stone "strongmen" with bulging eyes, knitted eyebrows and fangs onto pedestals to bear the weight of stone tablets, or steles, within its mausoleum pavilions at what is known as the Xixia Imperial Tombs. The necropolis, the final resting place of the Xixia emperors, is often described as the "Pyramids of the East." It is located in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region of northwest China.
