Over 200 rallies are being held across France, with all of the country’s unions joining the massive demonstration in Paris. Workers from the education, transport, energy, health, entertainment, financial sectors and more are answering unions’ call to join the strike, bringing much of the country to a halt. They are protesting Macron’s drive to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 and to force workers to pay into the pension system for longer. Recent polls put public opposition to the plans at 68%. While Paris is the center of the action, massive protests are also taking place in Nantes, Rouen, Bordeaux, Marseille and several other major cities. Philippe Martinez who heads France’s largest union, the CGT, told French TV that he hoped several million would join the day of action, adding: “This is the first day.
