Meanwhile, the conservative Christian Democratic Union, pretending their own 16-year reign never happened, is now blaming the self-caused crisis on migration. This week, Chancellor Olaf Scholz oversaw an unprecedented border crackdown. Xenophobia is now the norm in political talk shows, election campaign speeches, and in the Bundestag. The far-right AfD won its first regional election in Tühringen last week, the first time a far-right party has won an election since the Second World War.
