In March 2022, the UK airlifted 21 Ukrainian children with cancer into NHS hospitals within weeks. Ministers called it a proud and humanitarian response. But since Israel’s assault on Gaza began in October 2023, over 18,000 Palestinian children have been killed, and Britain has admitted just two for treatment. Neither was wounded in the war. Dr Abdel-Mannan explains this isn’t a question of capacity. Leading hospitals offered beds. Surgeons stepped forward. Charities raised the funds. But every application for a medical visa was blocked by the Home Office. The excuses, security, logistics, and medical suitability ring hollow when compared to the response to Ukraine. France, Italy, Canada, and even the US have admitted injured Palestinian children. Britain stands alone. Not as a leader, he says, but as a pariah. Dr Abdel-Mannan warns that this is not humanitarianism, but what he calls the “humanitarian alibi”: a performance of care that conceals complicity and avoids accountability. “Everyone, except Palestinians,” he says. That’s who the UK government has shown it believes is worthy of care. The double standard is indefensible. It is a national disgrace. He concludes by saying, doctors are ready. The beds are waiting. The only question now is whether Britain has the courage to act.
