The Washington Institute for Near East Policy (WINEP), a spin-off the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), is an influential think tank whose members have advocated a host of hawkish, “pro-Israel” policies over the years. It is a core member of the “Israel lobby” founded by Barbi Weinberg, who is considered the mother of the modern AIPAC. The establishment of The Washington Institute for Near East Policy in 1985 greatly expanded the pro-Israel lobby's influence over U.S. foreign policy. WINEP's first executive director, Martin Indyk, had previously been research director of AIPAC which, then as now, focuses much of its efforts on Congress. Indyk developed WINEP into a highly effective think tank devoted to maintaining and strengthening the U.S.-Israel alliance through advocacy in the media and lobbying the executive branch. Martin Indyk was born in 1951 in London, to a Jewish family who had immigrated from Poland. Indyk graduated from the University of Sydney in 1972 with a Bachelor of Economics. He then moved to Israel to take postgraduate courses at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Indyk immigrated to the United States in 1982 and started work with a lobbying group in Washington, D.C. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1993, a week before joining the National Security Council. Former AIPAC member MJ Rosenberg stated: “I was working at AIPAC and it was Steve Rosen who cleverly came up with the idea for an AIPAC controlled think-tank that would put forth the AIPAC line but in a way that would disguise its connections.” Rosen, the former foreign policy chief for AIPAC was accused of illegally disclosing classified information and was charged with espionage. The current executive director of WINEP is Robert Satloff. Barbi Weinberg still sits on the board. IAKN.org/TheIsraelLobby
