On The Freedom Side LIVE, Thursday, 2/01 at 3pm ET/12pm PT, Eugene and Rania are joined by special guests: Todd Miller - The fight between Texas and the federal government over the control of the US-Mexico border has further intensified, as the far-right, racist, anti-immigration extremism campaign further reverberates through the country. A clash over razor wire on the Texas border has led to Biden promising to “shut down the border” and an escalating standoff between the federal and state governments. Todd Miller, an author and journalist specializing in border issues, explains the standoff and how decades of bipartisan policies have led to the grave humanitarian crisis along the U.S.-Mexico border. Kwesi Pratt, Jr. - Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger announced their withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on January 28. In a statement announcing the exit, the three countries stated, “Under the influence of foreign powers”, the regional bloc of ECOWAS “has become a threat to its member states.” Kwesi Pratt, Jr. the General Secretary of the Socialist Movement Ghana (SMG), explains how West Africa’s popular movements are rising up against French neo-colonialism and what the withdrawal means for the region. Morgan Ody - For three days, thousands of French farmer protestors have blocked major highways in and out of Paris. The blockade is part of an intensifying protest movement of farmers across France and Europe, demonstrating against unequal subsidies and regulations that only benefit factory farms. Morgan Ody, a small-scale farmer in France and a member of the European Farmers Union, ‘La Via Campesina’, explains why French farmers are laying ‘siege’ to Paris. Brian Becker - President Biden has vowed retaliation for the attack that killed three US soldiers at a US military outpost near the Syria-Jordan border on January 28. While Biden predictably blamed “Iran-backed militias”, the responsibility for the attacks was claimed by militia in Iraq who have been targeting US bases across the region since October 7 for the US military and economic support for the Israeli genocide in Gaza. Brian Becker, the host of The Socialist Program, discusses the growing “Axis of Resistance'' and the expanding war in the Middle East. Ana Chã - January marked the 40th anniversary of the longest-running peasant movement in Brazil's history and one of the largest in Latin America: the Landless Rural Workers’ Movement (MST). Starting as a group of displaced farmers, over four decades the MST transformed into a mass movement to mobilize against fascism, in defense of agrarian reform, for the production of healthy food, and to fight predatory agribusiness. Ana Chã, a member of MST’s National Coordination, discusses the movement’s commitment against oppression and the challenges ahead. #BreakThroughNews
