In an interview with Middle East Eye, Egyptian journalist and blogger Hossam el-Hamalawy condemned the Egyptian regime’s deportation of international activists arriving to join the Global March to Gaza, calling it a "knee-jerk reaction" rooted in fear of dissent. El-Hamalawy explained that the regime, which emerged from the 2013 military coup, has systematically outlawed public assembly and restructured urban spaces to prevent any form of collective mobilisation. He noted that international activists arriving at Cairo airport were detained, interrogated, and in many cases deported—some on the same flights they arrived on. He also criticised Egypt’s continued closure of the Rafah crossing and its deference to Israeli approval for aid or evacuations, calling it a betrayal of Egypt’s historical stance and evidence of the regime’s weakness.
