For around ten years, Abu Ouda has worked with a group of women making ka’ak and ma’amoul (traditional filled pastries). The trade typically flourishes during festive seasons, helping to preserve Islamic traditions and the deeply rooted social customs of Gazans. However, the recent war has imposed a harsh reality on her life. Like many other residents of the Strip, she has faced repeated displacement, forcing her to stop working for extended periods. At other times, she has resorted to using alternative ingredients to continue baking, in an effort to sustain her livelihood and that of the women working alongside her. “We are trying to preserve our heritage and our traditions, just as we are trying to keep the children’s joy alive with Eid sweets, despite all the difficult circumstances,” Abu Ouda said.
