Cabañas is an important figure in Alexander Aviña's book Specters of Revolution: Peasant Guerrillas in the Cold War Mexican Countryside. He was a rural school teacher and head of the Party of the Poor (PDLP) which waged revolutionary armed struggle to overthrow the ruling PRI in Mexico. We'll talk to Aviña a bit about Cabañas who was assassinated 50 years ago this year. And get into the politics of the PDLP, the counterinsurgency of the PRI, and how we can think with these histories today. Alexander Aviña is a historian and professor. He is currently an Associate Professor of History in the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies at Arizona State University (ASU). His research focuses on twentieth-century Mexico, with an emphasis on revolutionary movements, the Mexican Left, state violence and terrorism, immigration, and the history of narcotics production and trafficking. He is the author of the book Specters of Revolution: Peasant Guerrillas in the Cold War Mexican Countryside. David Chávez teaches History & Ethnic Studies at Compton College. With his dissertation, “From Delinquents to Street Terrorists: L.A.’s War on Black and Chicanx Youth, 1945-1965,” Chávez has studied the policing and criminalization of those populations in Greater Los Angeles.
