He had previously been criticised for performing at an event in Saudi Arabia due to the Kingdom’s human rights abuses, notably the killing of MEE journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. Chappelle responded to the backlash, saying he didn’t know they “were still counting” after Israel killed more than 240 Palestinian journalists since it began its genocidal assault on Gaza in October 2023.
