But behind bars, Palestinian witnesses tell us thousands detained in Israeli custody are facing a vicious form of warfare. The Israeli Prison Service told MEE it "categorically rejected" these allegations. But they pile onto mounting evidence of abuse, including footage leaked by Israel’s former Chief Military Advocate last year that appears to show Israeli soldiers gang-raping a Palestinian prisoner. A UN inquiry published in March last year accused Israel of using sexualised torture and rape as "a method of war… to destabilize, dominate, oppress and destroy the Palestinian people". There are roughly 9,300 Palestinians currently in Israeli prison, around a third of whom remain in “administrative detention”, meaning they are held without charge or trial based on secret evidence they are not allowed to see. The number of prisoners doubled in the wake of October 7th, and is almost the highest it’s been since the Second Intifada in 2000. But it is not just the number that’s increased. Under the oversight of National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who came into office at the start of 2023, this imprisonment has also become more deadly.
