The far-right mob ransacked the buildings and called for military intervention against President Lula of the progressive Workers Party, who defeated Bolsonaro in elections held last year. On Monday, January 9, Peruvian security forces attacked an anti-government protest, opening fire on thousands of protestors and killing at least 17 people and leaving at least 68 others severely injured. The demonstrators were part of the nationwide protests demanding the release of former left-wing President Pedro Castillo, after he was ousted and arrested following a right-wing US-backed parliamentary coup on Dec. 7th.
