Today we honor both revolutionaries whose legacies continue the struggle for liberation of oppressed peoples. Despite their distances, they were deeply united in their resistance to imperialism, racism, and capitalism. Ho Chi Minh spent time in Harlem, where he worked as a dish washer. Here, he experienced the exploitation and poverty facing Black people in the US. He heard Marcus Garvey’s speeches on a number of occasions, which sharpened his critique of white supremacy in the United States. The lessons he learnt in the United States were central to the victory of the Vietnamese over US invaders. Born in Nebraska in 1925, Malcolm X would have been 100 years old this year. Malcolm has left us with writing and speeches that drive our struggle today—particularly his clarity in the need organize ourselves for liberation. Malcolm predicted US defeat in Vietnam and recognized the interconnected struggles for Black liberation in the US and national liberation for oppressed peoples globally. As we continue the struggle against the same forces of oppression, we honor Malcolm X and Ho Chi Minh’s lives committed to revolution, international solidarity, and an end to imperialism.
