The land parcel they occupied is part of a land holding of 11,000 hectares that has been in a legal suit for the last decade, as it allegedly belonged to Cabeça Branca, a drug trafficker prosecuted in Brazil. They have demanded that the government turn over the land to agrarian reform so that the landless peasants can live, work, and produce on it. Social movements have sharply condemned the right-wing government of Santiago Peña which they accuse of protecting the land of drug traffickers instead of securing access to a livelihood for landless peasants. The government is backed by a small sector of big landowners.
