Brown, a mother of three, was shot multiple times in the face as she attempted to drive away while ICE agents surrounded her vehicle. Agents later claimed the car was blocking their movement. The eyewitness said they ran outside after hearing gunshots and encountered a woman they believe to be Brown’s partner, who was desperately seeking help, her face covered in her partner's blood. The Trump administration has claimed the ICE agent acted in self-defence. Protesters and community members strongly dispute that account, calling the shooting a brutal and unlawful assault and an abuse of federal power. Minneapolis’ mayor, among others, condemned ICE’s presence in the city, saying the agency should “get the fuck out of” Minneapolis. Since the shooting, many major U.S. cities have seen mass anti-ICE protests, with demonstrators arguing that the killing of Renee Nicole Brown represents a horrifying abuse of federal authority.
