Gill points to Mark Carney’s speech at Davos declaring the end of the rules based order, noting that Carney himself was part of the western alliance that backed Israel’s war on Gaza and helped shred any remaining pretence of international law. He argues the rules were never universal, but selectively applied to protect western power while sanctioning or attacking countries from Palestine to Venezuela. He says that Trump has stripped away what remained of the system by sanctioning the International Criminal Court and defunding UN institutions, leaving even US allies exposed to the same coercion long faced by the Global South. As a result, alliances are rapidly shifting, with countries like Canada and Gulf states seeking new partners as US power becomes more unpredictable. Gill concludes that Trump’s Boards of Peace and Gaza represent a rules-free model of governance replacing the United Nations, but warns that reliance on force and intimidation signals not strength, but decline, and may be accelerating the collapse of American dominance itself.
