It's a new thing for me to like our mayor". On a freezing January day outside New York City Hall, New York City organisers gathered as Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as New York’s first Muslim mayor. The oath was administered by Bernie Sanders on a Quran held by Mamdani’s Syrian-American wife, Rama Duwaji. Many of the organisers, who also have involvement in Mamdani's transition team, told Middle East Eye's Maysa Mustafa that they viewed the inauguration as a new beginning for New York City, with particular attention on Mamdani’s pro-Palestine positions, which they said signalled a broader shift in American politics. Several expressed hope that the commitments made during the campaign would be reflected in policy decisions in the months ahead. Support stories that matter.
