<description>On April 27, 1978, the Saur Revolution triumphed in Afghanistan, following the overthrow of Mohammad Daoud’s regime and the seizure of power by popular militias who took the presidential palace in Kabul. The new Afghan People’s State and its drive toward socialism fought for women’s equal rights for the first time in Afghanistan, eliminated many unjust patriarchal and feudal practices—such as forced marriages—and empowered women to become active participants in the country, from entering politics and pursuing higher education to serving in the military and militias. The new Afghan state, led by the socialists of the People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan, carried out a massive program of social reforms, including the following: The popularity of Saur’s Revolution in Afghanistan was such that even the capitalist press, as fanatically anti-communist as The New York Times or Washington Post, admitted at the time that it was impossible to overthrow it with such popular support. The New York Times: “Almost every Afghan we interviewed said they were delighted with the coup and the new socialist regime.” Washington Post: “The loyalty of Afghans to the government cannot be questioned.” The Wall Street Journal: “More than 150,000 people marched to honor the new state flag; the participants seemed genuinely enthusiastic.” Saira Noorani, an Afghan surgeon who studied thanks to the Saur Revolution and who fled Afghanistan after the victory of the US and its Taliban mercenaries: “All the girls could go to high school and university. We could go wherever we wanted and dress however we wanted. We used to go to cafes and the cinema to see the latest Indian films every Friday. Everything started to go wrong when the Taliban began to win, whom the West supported.” This historic opportunity to bring Afghanistan into the modern age was drowned in blood by Western imperialism, by the United States and the United Kingdom, who financed and armed the Taliban, led by Osama Bin Laden, to crush the revolution. The same capitalist countries that today proclaim themselves “defenders of women’s rights” in Iran are the ones that imposed the burqa on women in Afghanistan, a practice that continues to this day, due to their sordid imperialist interests. Don’t forget that.
