The announcement came hours after US President Donald Trump said he’s dispatching a team to Islamabad for talks, with the goal of ending the war. Shortly after midnight, the US military seized an Iranian container ship called Touska. It’s the first non-military Iranian ship the US is known to have hit during the war. The US Central Command says the ship was trying to evade its blockade of the Strait. Iran says the US committed “piracy” and has threatened retribution. Trump imposed a naval blockade on the narrow waterway last Monday, hoping to neutralise Iran’s chokehold on global energy. But today’s maritime escalation has sent oil prices soaring once again, alongside fears of military escalation. So has the US’ Hormuz blockade backfired?
