Developed by Tombot, the interactive robotic dog is designed to provide emotional support for people with dementia who can no longer safely care for live pets. In the facility‘s memory care ward, where residents are typically in their mid-80s and older, Jennie responds to touch and voice commands, wagging, moving and reacting in ways meant to mirror a real puppy. Tombot CEO and co-founder Tom Stevens says the idea was inspired by his own mother, who was devastated when her dog had to be taken away after her Alzheimer’s diagnosis, a story he later learned is shared by hundreds of millions of seniors worldwide.
