Due to the Israeli blockade of Gaza, the vital materials needed for production of prosthetic limbs are in severe shortage, meaning many amputees are left without prostheses. Dr Ahmed Al-Absi, the head of the prosthetic limbs department at Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani hospital said that they have been forced to re-use and recycle prosthetic limbs, with some being provided to new users after the original owner had been killed. According to the World Health Organization, only eight prosthetic surgeons remain in Gaza, meaning the lack of available specialists has prolonged the trauma of injured patients who may have been able to receive treatment to rescue their limbs or recover more quickly.
