Leila Khaled, Hijacker (2005)

Call her a freedom fighter or a terrorist; Leila Khaled was the first woman to ever hijack an airplane. Born and raised in Haifa, in the 1960s Khaled became one of the most celebrated and reviled public figures of the PFLP. Raised by Palestinian exiles in Sweden, the filmmaker considered Khaled her teenage idol. Yet, settled into a seemingly conventional middle age in exile in Jordan, Khaled hardly seems the picture of revolutionary zeal the filmmaker imagined. Archival footage and engaging interviews with a still fierce Khaled, as well as the pilots, flight attendants, and passengers from the planes Khaled and her comrades hijacked, bring together public context and personal history with the passage of time to tell the stories of those harrowing flights and the woman who was willing to die to free her country.

@intercontinental_ballistic_marxist This is the other aspect of why I'm creating a decent catalog of documentaries and similar material.

Obviously there's the archival footage and those little islands of value amidst the sea of liberalism in western documentaries which can be worthwhile but also I think it's useful to have a record of the liberal playbook so that we can see how it has developed historically and we can see it being applied in a context that is removed from our immediate circumstances - often that distance affords us better perspective to deconstruct the liberal narrative-crafting.

I'm glad that you appreciate the work I'm doing here. I'm decent at sourcing material and I wanted to throw my weight behind this project to support it. At the moment it feels a little bit like I've set up a banquet but none of the guests have arrived, though eventually I think people will start to see the site as a bit of a destination where they know they will have easy access to mostly rare material that they might not be able to find elsewhere.

@inbracketsdontlaugh Yeah, that's basically my expectation most of the time. It's an unpleasant part of tempering our critical media consumption for sure. This is actually a wonderful documentary, but not for the reasons the creators intended.

Without getting into any of the obvious material and historical aspects... The thing that bugged me here is the subtext of the documentarian losing her empathy and revolutionary spirit she had when she was younger, succumbs to liberal indoctrination as an adult, then plans the entire documentary around confronting her own cognitive dissonance by embedding herself in Leila's personal life, and just waiting for the right moment to throw sand in her face, thus completing her journey to becoming a TurboLib. The documentarian even struggles to bring up her condemnation because she knows she's wrong to believe or say it. But hooboy, she sure goes for it in the end...

Even with the spin, the camera still only manages to capture Leila showing us what a smart, passionate, humble and dedicated pillar of resistance looks like.

Also, I've wanted to thank you for the mind-blowing amount of work you're doing on your channels and making all this available on an open platform. They're already some of the best resources on the internet.

@intercontinental_ballistic_marxist This is what kills me - virtually all of the documentaries available in English are dripping with liberal bullshit. Gramsci was 100% right about cultural hegemony.
Still, there's some value in these documentaries even if you have to sift the wheat from the piles chaff.
