President Biden announced today that he now supports setting aside the filibuster to pass a federal law for abortion rights. This announcement comes after mass public pressure, including hundreds of marches in the weeks since the leak of the Dobbs v. Mississippi decision that overturned Roe, and the refusal of Biden to end the filibuster and let a simple majority vote through the Build Back Better Act earlier in his presidency. Claudia De La Cruz, co-executive director of The People’s Forum, popular educator, community organizer, and theologian, breaks down the political situation and what it will regain and expand abortion rights. The war in Ukraine is still going on, though U.S. media coverage has slowed to a trickle. What’s going on and why is it no longer front page news? Eugene and Rania discuss. Being held this week is both the Group of Seven (G-7) Summit, made up of the colonizing countries, and the BRICS (Brazil Russia India China South Africa) Summit, which includes those countries and other developing and growing countries. Marco Fernandes, researcher with Tricontinental, member of Dongsheng News collective & member of No Cold War campaign, explains the stark contrasts of the two as BRICS expands and grows. A national strike in Ecuador led by Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE) is in its 18th day, as a new round of talks begin between the Government of Guillermo Lasso and the Indigenous Confederation CONAIE. The people’s demands are focused on ending privatization, exploitation of workers and Indigenous communities, and the violence from drug trafficking. Guillaume Long, former Ecuadorian Minister of Foreign Affairs & Representative to the UN and senior policy analyst at the Center for Economic and Policy Research explains. More than 50 people were found dead this week, trapped in a tractor trailer in the Texas heat in San Antonio, likely after crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. Another 23 or more died crossing the Morocco border into Spain this week. Todd Miller, independent journalist & author of 4 books, including "Border Patrol Nation" and most recently "Build Bridges, Not Walls," talks about why this is happening.
