Crypto billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried has been indicted on fraud and conspiracy charges following the collapse of FTX, the cryptocurrency exchange he founded. FTX was one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world and its collapse cost over $1 billion, destroying many working people’s savings. Chris Caruso, an economic researcher who works at the Kairos Center, discusses the FTX Ponzi scheme and what its collapse tells us about the reality of capitalist crypto markets. Protests are intensifying across Peru following the Dec. 7th right-wing US-backed parliamentary coup and arrest of the democratically elected President Pedro Castillo. Despite heavy police repression, tens of thousands of Peruvians have been protesting, calling for Castillo’s immediate release and for him to be reinstated as the country's president. Journalist @ZoPepperC, co-editor of PeoplesDispatch, covering social movements and left politics in Latin America and the Caribbean, discusses how the campaign to overthrow Castillo unfolded and how tens of thousands of Peruvian people are fighting back. Western Sahara, located in the African Maghreb, is Africa’s last colony. Formerly a colony of Spain, the majority of the resource-rich Western Saharan territories have been under Moroccan occupation since 1975. Since then, the people of Western Sahara have been fighting against the Western-backed Moroccan occupation for the liberation of their country. Mahjoub Maliha of Collective of Saharawi Human Rights Defenders (CODESA) joins the show to discuss the current situation in Western Sahara. For over a century, the Espionage Act of 1917 has been used by the US government to silence journalists, whistleblowers, and leftist groups. From Eugene Debs to Julian Assange, the Act has been a repressive tool against dissent. Carey Shenkman, a constitutional lawyer, joins the show to discuss his book A Century of Repression: The Espionage Act and Freedom of the Press to break down the scope and impact of the Act. Railroad workers are still fighting against the Biden/Congress pro-corporate imposed contract. The deal, which was rejected by over half of unionized rail workers, effectively denies their right to strike and collectively bargain. Following the vote, rallies have taken place across the country in solidarity with the rail workers. Ross Grooters, working locomotive engineer and Co-chair of Railroad Workers United (RWU), explains the ongoing struggle and RWU’s demand for public ownership of the railroads, instead of the billionaires. ►Become a Patron: https://www.patreon.com/BreakThroughNews ►Tweet us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/BTnewsroom ►Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/btnewsroom/ ►Follow us on Telegram: https://t.me/btnewsroom ►Follow us on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@btnewsroom #BreakThroughNews
