On The Freedom Side LIVE, Thursday, 4/25 at 3pm ET/12pm PT, Eugene and Rania are joined by special guests: Grant Miner - Columbia University is threatening to call in the National Guard to evacuate the Gaza solidarity encampment, where hundreds of students are holding the campus lawn until Columbia agrees to divest from Israel. The protest, and the subsequent police raid ordered by Columbia, has inspired campuses all over the country to escalate their tactics to demand divestment. Grant Miner, a PhD candidate at Columbia and the vice president of SWC UAW 2710, which is a part of Columbia University Apartheid Divest, joins Rania and Eugene to discuss the historic protest and how students across the US have joined the call to stand in solidarity with Palestine. Ali Mortada - Hezbollah, the Lebanese resistance forces, has been fiercely confronting the Israeli army along its southern border in solidarity with the Palestinian resistance since the onset of the Gaza war. Ali Mortada, a Lebanon-based journalist and host for Al-Mayadeen network, joins the show to give insight on the view of the war from the region. Amanda Yee - The House and Senate just passed a $95 billion bill to reinforce the U.S. war machine and ban the social media app where its critics are loudest. The legislation attached the measure to ban TikTok with more funding for Israel’s Gaza onslaught, the stalling war in Ukraine, and for Taiwan to pump up a Cold War with China. Amanda Yee, a Journalist and the Managing Editor of Liberation News analyzes why there is broad consensus in Congress for expansion of censorship and the U.S. war machine but for little else. Jesse Rabinowitz - The Supreme Court heard arguments on Monday to review the constitutionality of a Florida law that criminalizes sleeping in public spaces, even as the number of people experiencing homelessness continues to skyrocket while the state provides scarce shelter options. Jesse Rabinowitz, the Campaign Director at the National Homelessness Law Center explains the potential dangers of the landmark Supreme Court case and why, unsurprisingly, cities cannot punish their way out of the homelessness crisis. Husayn Karimi - Tennessee Volkswagen workers achieved a historic victory on April 19 by overwhelmingly voting to join the United Auto Workers (UAW) labor union. This victory marked the first time since 1941 that a nonunion automaker in the U.S. has successfully unionized. Husayn Karimi, a labor journalist with On the Line, explains how this watershed moment will lead to a tidal wave of new organizing in the South and catapult the labor movement into a new era.
