The coordinated strike shut hundreds of businesses and sent a huge crowd into downtown streets in subzero temperatures, where marchers chanted against ICE’s heavy federal enforcement and the fatal shooting of Renee Good by an ICE agent. Protesters pressed aggressively for an end to the agency’s presence in Minnesota and a halt to what they call bullying and unconstitutional tactics. ICE has long been a source of national controversy in the US because it detains hundreds of thousands of immigrants each year, many of whom have no criminal record, and holds them in civil detention while their immigration cases play out in court. Critics say ICE treats immigrants like criminals, transferring them between facilities in ways that delay court hearings to extend their detention, and ultimately break them into accepting deportation.
