Thunberg and 11 other activists are currently on board the Madleen, a small ship carrying humanitarian aid, aim to breach Israel’s siege of Gaza in six days and to bring international attention to the ongoing starvation of Palestinians. The ship is carrying urgently needed supplies including baby formula, flour, rice, diapers, women’s sanitary products, water desalination kits, medical supplies, crutches, and children’s prosthetics. It’s organised as part of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, an international group of activists who have been attempting to breach the 18 year siege on Gaza for more than since 2010. In 2010, a large Turkish ship called the Mavi Marmara was intercepted by Israeli commandos, who boarded the vessel using helicopters and speedboats while still in international waters and killed 10 activists. Thunberg says they are aware of the risks to their lives if they’re intercepted, and have taken precautions and are ‘unarmed and peaceful’.
