Although the North Korean constitution designates "애국가"/"Aegukka" (The Patriotic Song) as the de-jure national anthem of the DPRK, the two songs "Song of General Kim Il-sung" and "Song of General Kim Jong-il" are used more frequently domestically than "Aegukka". "Aegukka" is mostly reserved for international undertakings such as sporting events or diplomatic visits. Domestic performances of "Aegukka" are almost always followed by performances of "Song of General Kim Il-sung" and "Song of General Kim Jong-il", such as when North Korean TV channels begin airing every morning. "Song of General Kim Il-sung" was composed in Juche 35 (1946 on the Gregorian Calendar) by Kim Won-gyun with lyrics by Ri Chan. It gained popularity during the Juche 70s (1980s on the Gregorian Calendar) when the ruling Kim Jong-il promoted the song over "Aegukka", eventually replacing it as the de-facto national anthem.
