In early 1938, the internationalist warrior Norman Bethune (played by Tan Ningbang) traveled across the ocean to China to support the Chinese people's resistance against Japan. Chairman Mao received him in Yan'an, and the Military Health Department arranged for him to be a medical consultant. Bethune discovered that the medical conditions in the border areas were much worse than he had imagined. He requested permission from the commander (played by Wu Xue) to establish a model hospital in the rear area, where doctors from various regions could come for training. Despite personal risks, he personally went to the front lines to perform surgeries on severely wounded soldiers. Due to the lack of essential medical equipment, many critically wounded soldiers couldn't receive timely treatment, which deeply troubled Bethune. He decided to return to Canada once, but the sudden outbreak of a battle halted his journey home. He told Dr. Fang (played by Cun Li) and Secretary Tong (played by Ying Ruocheng) who were escorting him, "I'm not leaving. They need me here even more." After the Battle of Huangtuling, during a surgery for a soldier, he accidentally cut his finger, and the tragedy became unavoidable...
